The municipality is particularly favored geographically, as it often lies above the autumn fog ceiling, earning it a reputation as a sunny location. Historically, the place was first mentioned in a document in 794. A significant economic milestone was the discovery of salt deposits in the Riburg district in 1848, which led to the founding of the Riburg salt works, which still plays a central role in Switzerland's salt supply today.
