Arburg Fortress (Switzerland)

Weather…

Aarburg Fortress towers imposingly on a steep rocky ridge above the Aare River in the Canton of Aargau. Originally founded in the 12th century by the Barons of Büron, it fell to the city of Bern in 1415, which subsequently expanded it into one of Switzerland's most massive fortification systems. During the 17th century, the fortress was significantly enlarged to secure the vital river crossing and the main road between Bern and Zurich. Its striking appearance is defined by its white walls and its prominent location at a bend in the Aare. In the 19th century, the fortress served as a state prison and later as a reformatory. Today, it houses a cantonal youth detention center, though parts of the complex are open to the public. The fortress is a monument of national significance for Bernese military architecture and dominates the landscape at the southern foot of the Jura Mountains.
