Oftringen is located in the lower Wiggertal, in the southwest of the Canton of Aargau. The municipality is known far beyond national borders as the motorway junction of Switzerland, where the main transport axes A1 (East-West) and A2 (North-South) meet. The settlement history dates back to Roman times, evidenced by the remains of a Roman villa. The first written mention occurred in 1103 as Ofteringa. In the Middle Ages, the area was under the influence of the Counts of Frohburg and later the Habsburgs. A striking landmark is the Alt-Wartburg ruin, perched high above the village on a rocky outcrop, which was destroyed in 1415 during the conquest of Aargau by the Confederates. In the 20th century, Oftringen evolved from an agricultural community into a modern industrial and service hub. Its favorable transport location has led to the settlement of numerous logistics companies and large shopping centers like the Perry Center. Despite intensive structural development, the municipality gives attractive local recreation areas and hiking trails along the Engelberg hill range. Oftringen maintains close cooperation with the neighboring town of Zofingen, with which it has almost merged physically, yet it preserves its political independence and a bustling village culture.
