Augusta Raurica Roman Site II (Switzerland)

Weather…

Augusta Raurica, located near modern-day Basel, stands as the oldest Roman colony on the Rhine and serves as one of Switzerland's most significant archaeological landmarks. Founded around 44 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus, the city grew into a major commercial hub, reaching a peak population of nearly 20,000 residents by the 2nd century AD. The expansive site features remarkably preserved monuments, including an ancient theater that once seated 10,000 people, as well as the remains of the forum, various temples, and public baths. A major highlight for visitors is the Roman Museum, home to the famed Kaiseraugst silver hoard, one of the largest late-Roman silver finds in history, discovered in 1961. The site provides immersive experiences, such as reconstructed Roman dwellings and accessible ancient sewer tunnels that showcase Roman engineering. Beyond its role as an open-air museum, Augusta Raurica remains a vital research center dedicated to uncovering the social and architectural history of the Roman province of Germania Superior.
