Rakov Škocjan (Slovenia)

Weather…

Rakov Škocjan is a scenic karst valley at the foot of Mount Javorniki, formed by the collapse of ancient cave ceilings. In 1949, it became the first area in Slovenia to be protected as a landscape park and is globally renowned for its exceptional geological formations. The Rak stream flows through the roughly 2.5-kilometer-long valley, emerging from the Zelške caves and later disappearing back underground into the Tkalca cave. The most spectacular features of the park are the Small and Big Natural Bridges, remnants of the original cave systems that now form massive stone arches over the valley floor. The flora in the park is shaped by the valley's specific microclimatic conditions, featuring a mix of subalpine and Dinaric plant species. An educational trail guides visitors to the main points of interest, providing detailed information about the complex hydrology of the karst landscape. Rakov Škocjan serves as an outstanding natural laboratory for studying how water dynamically shapes the limestone surface over millennia.
