Litija is a historical town in central Slovenia, situated on the left bank of the Sava River and first mentioned in written records in 1256. The town evolved into a significant transport hub during the 19th century when the Austrian Southern Railway reached the area in 1849, connecting Vienna with Trieste. A central pillar of the town's history is the Sitarjevec mine, once one of the most productive mines in Slovenia, yielding over 60 different types of minerals, including lead, mercury, and barite. Beyond its industrial legacy, Litija is famous as the starting point for the Levstik Trail, a cultural hike commemorating the writer Fran Levstik that attracts thousands of participants annually. Geographically, the town sits at the transition between the Posavje Hills and the Ljubljana Basin, providing a strategic location for regional trade and logistics. Today, the town has a population of around 6,500 and serves as the primary administrative and economic center for the Litija Basin.
