Planina Plain (Planinsko polje) is one of Slovenia's most perfectly formed karst basins, situated in the drainage area of the Unica River. Covering about 5 square kilometers, it is famous for its regular seasonal flooding, which transforms the field into a temporary lake. The water emerges from the Planina Cave at the southern edge of the plain, which is recognized as one of the largest water caves in Europe. Geologically, the plain is a textbook example of karst geomorphology, featuring an impermeable floor surrounded by limestone hills. The area is ecologically significant, hosting rare plant species such as the snake's head fritillary. Historically, the region served as a vital transit route between central Slovenia and the Adriatic coast. The ruins of Haasberg Castle on the edge of the plain reflect the area's past strategic and cultural importance. Hikers and nature lovers frequent the area in spring and autumn to witness the dramatic changes in the landscape caused by fluctuating water levels.

The plain is typically accessed easily from the nearby towns. Visitors generally drive along the local roads that skirt the edge of the polje, providing excellent initial viewpoints before walking down.

Spring and autumn are generally the most dramatic times to visit, as heavy rains often cause the Unica River to flood the plain completely. Summer is typically greener, showing the classic meandering shape of the riverbed.

The vast, flat expanse of the karst polje provides mostly completely level walking paths. When the plain is not flooded, hikers generally walk directly across the grassy meadows alongside the meandering river.

Waterproof boots are usually strongly recommended, as the ground can remain soggy long after the floods recede. Bringing a camera is generally a must to capture the unique reflections when the plain becomes a temporary lake.
