Nova Gorica is one of Slovenia's youngest cities, established after 1947 as a planned urban center following the post-WWII division that left the historic city of Gorizia in Italy. Designed with modernist principles, the city features wide boulevards and lush greenery, earning it the nickname 'Town of Roses.' It sits directly on the border with Italy, and the Transalpina Square has become a powerful symbol of European integration, allowing pedestrians to walk freely between the two nations. Perched on a nearby hill, the Kostanjevica Monastery holds unexpected historical significance as the burial site of the last French Bourbon monarchs, including King Charles X. The region enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, fostering a renowned wine culture in the surrounding Vipava Valley and Goriška Brda. Nova Gorica is also a major hub for the gaming and entertainment industry in Central Europe. In 2025, it will co-host the European Capital of Culture alongside Italy's Gorizia, celebrating their shared heritage and future.
