Škofja Loka is regarded as one of Slovenia's best-preserved medieval towns, located at the confluence of the Selca Sora and Poljane Sora rivers. Its history is deeply intertwined with the Bishops of Freising, who received the territory in 973 through a grant from Emperor Otto II. Perched above the town is Loka Castle, originally built in the 13th century, which now serves as the Loka Museum. The historic urban core consists of the Upper Square (Mestni trg) and the Lower Square (Lontrg), characterized by dense medieval architectural patterns. A standout structure is the 14th-century Capuchin Bridge, among the oldest stone bridges in Central Europe. The town is globally renowned for the Škofja Loka Passion Play, a Baroque dramatic performance written in 1721 and inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Today, it remains an animated cultural center and a gateway to the surrounding Alpine foothills.
