Kočevje is the central hub of Slovenia's most forested region, possessing a unique and layered history defined by the Gottscheer Germans who settled here in the 14th century. For over 600 years, this community maintained a distinct dialect and culture until their mass exodus during and after World War II, fundamentally reshaping the region's identity. Geographically, the town is encircled by the vast, untamed wilderness of the Kočevski Rog plateau, which hosts some of Europe's most significant populations of brown bears, wolves, and lynxes. The Kočevje Lake, a man-made body of water formed in a former open-pit coal mine, has become a premier destination for fishing and diving. Historically significant sites include the once-secret Cold War bunker at Škrilj and the poignant memorials within the forests. Modern Kočevje has successfully attracted high-tech investment, notably the Yaskawa robotics factory, while positioning itself as Slovenia's leading destination for wildlife observation and eco-tourism.

Serving as the primary beach on the pretty lake in Kočevje, Glavna plaža Jezero is beautifully framed by lush green forests. It projects a distinctly serene and natural vibe, proving very popular with both resting locals and traveling nature lovers. Guests can take a peaceful swim in the calm lake waters or easily enjoy a picnic along the expansive shoreline. Bringing along a cozy blanket and some outdoor games makes for a good summer afternoon.
