Ajdovščina lies in the heart of the Vipava Valley, characterized by its deep Roman heritage and unique climatic conditions. During the Roman era, it was known as Castra Ad Fluvium Frigidum, a vital military fortress guarding the route to Italy. In 394 AD, the nearby Battle of the Frigidus took place, where Emperor Theodosius I defeated the usurper Eugenius, a victory that consolidated Christianity as the Roman state religion. Portions of the original Roman defensive walls and towers remain standing in the town center today. The urban layout and building techniques are specifically adapted to withstand the Burja (Bora), a powerful katabatic wind that can exceed 200 km/h. By the 19th century, Ajdovščina had evolved into a hub for food processing and textiles. It is also home to the Pilon Gallery, showcasing the works of the acclaimed Expressionist artist Veno Pilon.
