Cerknica Plain (Slovenia)

Weather…

Cerknica Plain (Cerknisko polje) is a vast karst field in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia, world-renowned for Lake Cerknica, the largest intermittent lake on Earth. The plain covers an area of about 38 square kilometers and is drained by a complex underground karst system. Depending on the season and rainfall, the basin fills with water to become a massive lake, which often completely disappears during summer, leaving behind fertile grasslands. This phenomenon was famously described in the 17th century by the scholar Valvasor. The area is part of the Notranjska Regional Park and is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. It provides a critical habitat for over 270 bird species and numerous rare plants. Geologically, the plain is bordered by limestone and dolomite ridges, while its floor consists of impermeable sediments. Local communities, like the town of Cerknica, have historically adapted their way of life to the dramatic seasonal shifts of the water.
