Since 2000, an international jazz community gathers every August in Novo Mesto for a week-long music workshop. Evening concerts with Slovenian and international musicians accompany the training week.
One of the biggest events in the Dolenjska region honouring the local cviček wine, held every May in Novo Mesto. It features a parade, the crowning of the cviček king, concerts and a rich entertainment programme.
Novo Mesto was founded on April 7, 1365, by Rudolf IV of Austria under the name Rudolfswert, situated within a strategic bend of the Krka River. The city evolved into the primary administrative and economic hub of the Lower Carniola (Dolenjska) region, a status it maintains today. Its historic core features the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, which houses a notable altarpiece by Tintoretto, and a Franciscan monastery established in the 15th century. During the 20th century, Novo Mesto emerged as a global industrial center, driven by the pharmaceutical company Krka and the Revoz automotive plant. The city is also an archaeological treasure trove, particularly famous for its Hallstatt-era bronze situlae, leading to its nickname as the City of Situlae. This blend of millennia-old settlement history and modern manufacturing prowess defines the character of Slovenia's seventh-largest city.
