The Pivka Intermittent Lakes Landscape Park is a globally unique karst phenomenon located in the Upper Pivka Basin. The area comprises 17 periodically appearing lakes that fill after heavy rainfall when the groundwater level rises within the karst bedrock. The largest of these is Lake Palško, while Lake Petelinjsko retains water the longest, sometimes for up to six months a year. This dynamic landscape hosts extraordinary biodiversity, as the local flora and fauna have adapted to the constant cycle of flooding and drying. Rare dragonfly species, crustaceans, and a variety of orchids can be found here on the dry calcareous grasslands.
