Highlights of 2026

Trbovlje is the industrial heart of the Zasavje region, shaped by over two centuries of coal mining history that fundamentally altered its social and physical landscape. Following the discovery of coal in 1804, the settlement evolved from a rural village into a powerhouse of heavy industry. The town's most prominent landmark is the Trbovlje Chimney; standing at 360 meters, it remains the tallest chimney in Europe, built in 1976 to carry pollutants out of the deep valley. Architectural features include historic miners' housing estates, known as 'colonies', and massive industrial structures that now serve as monuments to the town's heritage. Trbovlje is also renowned as a hub of avant-garde culture, being the birthplace of the world-famous band Laibach and the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) movement. Since the official closure of the coal mines in 2014, the town has successfully pivoted toward high-tech innovation, particularly in robotics and aerospace software, while preserving its mining legacy through digital museums.
