Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle is one of the most dramatic sights in Slovenia, holding the Guinness World Record for the largest cave castle. Perched in the middle of a 123-meter-high cliff for over 800 years, this Renaissance fortress is a masterpiece of defensive architecture. The castle seamlessly blends man-made walls with the natural rock of the cave, making it virtually impregnable to traditional sieges throughout its turbulent history. The castle is famous for the legend of Erasmus of Lueg, the 'robber baron' who resisted the imperial army for over a year in the 15th century. Erasmus used a secret network of tunnels behind the castle to bring in fresh supplies, famously taunting his besiegers by throwing cherries at them. His downfall only came through the betrayal of a servant. Today, the castle functions as a museum, showcasing the living quarters, a chapel, an armory, and a chilling torture chamber, providing a vivid look into medieval life. Visitors can explore the various levels of the castle and even peek into the cave system behind the inner walls. Beneath the castle lies another cave which is home to a colony of bats and is open for guided tours only in the summer. Located just 10 kilometers from Postojna, the castle is an essential stop for any traveler in the region. Every year, the castle grounds host a medieval knight's tournament, bringing the legendary history of the site back to life.
