Vrhnika is situated at the western edge of the Ljubljana Marshes, where the Ljubljanica River emerges from several karst springs. In antiquity, the settlement was known as Nauportus, a major Roman trading port where goods from the Adriatic were transferred onto boats heading toward Emona. The town is inextricably linked to Ivan Cankar, Slovenia's most prominent realist writer, who was born here in 1876. A catastrophic earthquake in 1895 damaged many historical structures but also spurred subsequent urban modernization. Nearby Bistra Castle houses the Technical Museum of Slovenia, showcasing an extensive collection of industrial and technological heritage. Today, Vrhnika serves as an important satellite town of Ljubljana, maintaining a legacy of leather production and woodworking industries.
