Lučenec is the animated historical, economic, and cultural center of the traditional Novohrad region in the southern part of Central Slovakia. Situated in a wide, fertile basin near the Hungarian border, the city served as an important commercial hub for centuries, and its rich history is reflected in its diverse architecture. A remarkable architectural jewel of the city is the beautifully restored Art Nouveau synagogue, one of the largest in Slovakia, which today serves as an impressive multicultural center. Although historically dominated by agriculture, Lučenec has developed into a modern city with growing industry while carefully preserving the charm of its historical monuments. The city also serves as the excellent starting point for exploring the cross-border Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark, an area of exceptional geological significance.
