Rožňava, picturesquely positioned in the basin of the Slaná River and surrounded by the steep slopes of the Slovak Karst (Slovenský kras) and the Volovec Mountains, is the historic and cultural heart of the traditional Gemer region. The city was once one of the most important centers for gold, silver, and iron ore mining in the Kingdom of Hungary, a wealth that is still reflected today in its wide-open square main plaza lined with magnificent medieval and Baroque burgher houses. In the center of this square majestically rises the 17th-century Watchtower, the undisputed landmark of Rožňava. Today, the city serves as the handy gateway to the wonders of the Slovak Karst, particularly the famous Domica Cave and the Ochtinská Aragonite Cave, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Near the city also stands the fairytale Betliar Castle, one of the best-preserved aristocratic residences in Slovakia.
