Ipolytarnoc Fossils (Hungary)

Weather…

The Ipolytarnóc Fossils Nature Reserve is one of the world's most significant paleontological sites, often referred to as the 'Prehistoric Pompeii'. Around 17-18 million years ago, a volcanic eruption covered the area with hot ash, perfectly preserving the Miocene flora and fauna. Excavations have identified more than 3,000 animal footprints, including those of rhinoceroses, bear-dogs, and birds of prey. The site features a gigantic petrified pine trunk, along with a rich collection of shark teeth and fossilized leaves. This European Diploma-holding visitor center has interactive exhibitions, a 4D cinema, and geological trails that showcase the ancient ecology of the Carpathian Basin. The international importance of the site is reflected in its membership in the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark, which is supported by UNESCO.
