Spišská Kapitula (Slovakia)

Weather…

Spišská Kapitula, rising on a hill opposite the monumental Spiš Castle (Spišský hrad), is no ordinary city center but an entirely walled, extraordinary ecclesiastical town often referred to as the "Slovak Vatican." It is the spiritual center of the Spiš region and has been the seat of the Spiš provosts (now bishops) since the 12th century. The architectural masterpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage site is the Cathedral of St. Martin, a massive Romanesque-Gothic structure with twin towers and fascinating interiors, including valuable Gothic altars and the oldest known Slovak wall painting depicting the coronation of Charles Robert of Anjou. A single street, lined with the Gothic and Renaissance houses of the canons, runs through the small town, exuding an aura of great tranquility and deep historical reverence.
