Martin, idyllically positioned in the Turiec Basin and framed by the scenic peaks of the Lesser and Greater Fatra mountains, is regarded as the undisputed historical center of the Slovak national movement. In the 19th century, the city became the spiritual and cultural focal point for Slovaks, culminating in the signing of the historic Memorandum of the Slovak Nation in 1861. Two years later, the Matica slovenská, the most important national cultural institution, was founded here and maintains its headquarters in Martin to this day. Beyond its political history, the city has a fascinating glimpse into the country's traditional folk architecture with the Museum of the Slovak Village (Jahodnícke háje) open-air museum. Today, Martin combines its significant historical and literary heritage with the dynamism of a modern district town, which is also historically known for its strong heavy engineering industry.
