💡 Tips
- Climb the Bebek Tower in the castle for the best panoramic view of the Cerová vrchovina volcanic landscape.
- Since a large part of the population is ethnic Hungarian, you can easily use both Slovak and Hungarian to communicate.
- Visit the castle ruins early in the morning during summer; the basalt rock gets very hot and features little shade.
- You can usually find free or cheap parking near the main entrance to the castle.
🍽 Food
Look for traditional pubs around the main street serving hearty stews with local bread.
Try the classic Slovak herbal cola, widely available on tap in the local bars beneath the castle.
Grab this deep-fried flatbread with garlic and cheese from small street food stalls in the town center.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the central market area on weekend mornings for fresh regional produce and snacks.
Look out for local artisans selling traditional crafts near the castle during summer events.
A small, shaded green space near the center, excellent for a rest after climbing the castle ruins.
Take a short walk just outside the town limits to explore the quiet, extinct volcanic landscapes.

Fiľakovo (Fülek), charmingly positioned in the hills of the Cerová vrchovina highlands in southern Slovakia, is a city forever shaped by its striking volcanic landscape and its fortified past. Right in the city center, majestically rising atop a tuff rock, stands the impressive ruin of Fiľakovo Castle (Fiľakovský hrad). This 13th-century fortress was a crucial bulwark for centuries, heroically defended against numerous sieges, including those by the Mongols and Ottomans, before being destroyed in 1682. Today, the meticulously secured castle grounds, featuring a historical museum in the Bebek Tower, are the main attraction for tourists. The city itself is characterized by an animated multicultural atmosphere heavily influenced by the Hungarian minority and provides an excellent entry point into the UNESCO Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark.
