Kremnica (Slovakia)

Weather…

Kremnica is one of Slovakia's most historic mining towns, set in the heart of the Kremnica Mountains. In the Middle Ages, the city was one of the wealthiest in the Kingdom of Hungary due to its rich gold deposits. Its most outstanding feature is the state mint, founded in 1328, which has operated continuously to this day, now minting, among others, Slovak Euro coins. The historic center is an architectural gem, dominated by the town castle complex with the Gothic St. Catherine's Church. The magnificent main square features one of the largest Baroque plague columns in the world. Visitors can tour the Museum of Coins and Medals or venture down into the former gold mining shafts to experience the miners' difficult life. Kremnica is located about 200 kilometers east of Bratislava. The town is attractive year-round: in summer, hiking trails are popular, while winter brings skiers to the nearby Skalka resort. A unique experience is the 'Kremnica Gags' festival, a European festival of humor and satire held every August.
