Brezno, idyllically situated in the narrow valley of the Hron River and framed by the impressive ridges of the Low Tatras to the north and the Slovak Ore Mountains to the south, is the natural center of the historic Horehronie (Upper Hron Valley) region. The city has a long and proud tradition as a former royal mining and craft town, which is still reflected today in its square main plaza lined with historic burgher houses. In the center of this square stands the striking, free-standing town tower (Mestská veža), a Classical clock tower that serves as the absolute symbol of Brezno. While Brezno was heavily industrialized in the 20th century due to metallurgy (Mostáreň Brezno), today it is increasingly transforming into an attractive gateway for mountain tourism, offering quick access to premier ski resorts like Chopok-South and endless hiking trails.
