Divín Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Divín Castle stands on a prominent hill overlooking the village of the same name at the edge of the Krupina Plateau in southern Slovakia. It was established in the 13th century following the Tatar invasions to protect the nearby mining districts and valleys from enemy incursions. A pivotal moment in its history occurred in 1575 when the castle was captured by the Ottomans after a lengthy siege, serving as a vital Turkish outpost for nearly twenty years. Following its liberation by imperial forces in 1593, the fortress was modernized and strengthened with Renaissance-style fortifications. In the 17th century, it became the seat of the notorious Imre Balassa, whose marauding and defiance of the imperial court eventually prompted imperial troops to besiege and blow up the castle in 1679. The preserved ruins today clearly display Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements and the strategic layout of its defensive systems.
