Prievidza, picturesquely set in the valley of the Nitra River and surrounded by the densely forested slopes of the Strážov and Vtáčnik mountains, is the pulsating heart of the Upper Nitra region. The city developed rapidly in the 20th century due to intensive brown coal mining and was an industrial powerhouse of Slovakia for decades. Today, Prievidza is undergoing an exciting structural transformation, shifting from heavy industry towards more sustainable economic models. The cityscape is marked by the imposing Piarist Church of St. Bartholomew, considered one of the most valuable Baroque monuments in Central Europe. Together with the immediately adjacent spa and castle town of Bojnice, Prievidza forms a significant urban agglomeration that plays a key role in the region, both touristically and economically.
