Vlkolínec, an administrative part of the city of Ružomberok, is an exceptionally well-preserved settlement of traditional Central Carpathian folk architecture, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. The village was first mentioned in written records in 1376, and its name is derived from the Slovak word for 'wolf.' The site is unique for its collection of over 40 original log houses, built on high stone foundations and painted in animated lime-based colors, representing the lifestyle of 18th and 19th-century mountain dwellers. While archaeological evidence shows prehistoric activity in the area, the current layout showcases the heritage of local woodcutters and shepherds. Key structures include the wooden bell tower from 1770 and the original stone well. Vlkolínec remains a living village with permanent residents, making it a rare authentic example of Slovak vernacular architecture rather than a static open-air museum.
