Zvolen, idyllically situated at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers in the photogenic setting of central Slovakia, is a city with deeply rooted royal and forestry traditions. The most striking landmark is the monumental Zvolen Castle in the city center, built in the 14th century by King Louis I the Great as a Gothic hunting residence; today, it houses valuable exhibitions of the Slovak National Gallery. Furthermore, on a nearby forested hill stand the ruins of the much older 'Deserted Castle' (Pustý hrad), which was once one of the largest fortifications in Europe by area. Besides this impressive historical aura, Zvolen is today a vital railway junction, an established center of the wood processing industry, and, above all, the seat of the prestigious Technical University, renowned nationwide for its forestry faculties.
