Somoskő Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Somoskő Castle stands atop a steep basalt cone directly on the Hungarian-Slovak border, overlooking the village of Somoskő. The castle was built after the Mongol invasion in the late 13th century by the Kacsics clan to monitor trade routes leading north. During the Ottoman wars, it was a vital border fortress; it fell to the Turks in 1576 but was recaptured in 1593. Adjacent to the castle walls lies a globally unique geological formation: the Somoskő basalt organ, consisting of 16-meter-high, curved basalt columns. Although the castle is administratively located in Slovakia today, most visitors arrive from the Hungarian side, and it remains deeply connected to the history of the Salgótarján region. From the castle towers, one can enjoy an unparalleled view of the nearby Salgó Castle and the Medves Plateau.
