Kremnica City Fortifications (Slovakia)

Weather…

The city fortifications of Kremnica represent one of the best-preserved and most significant medieval defensive systems in Central Europe, with construction starting in the 14th century. Due to its status as a major gold-mining and minting center, the town required robust protection against Hussite raids and later Ottoman threats. The system consisted of a double concentric wall, water ditches, and numerous defensive towers, many of which remain in excellent condition today. A key feature is the Lower Gate with its barbican system, which served as the primary entrance to the historical core. The fortification was closely integrated with the Town Castle complex situated on a hill above the central square, also safeguarding the royal mint that has operated continuously since 1328. Today, the preserved wall segments and bastions provide a clear insight into the strategic importance of this 'Golden City' within the Kingdom of Hungary. Visitors can explore the bastions and the inner defense perimeter, which illustrates the wealth and military preparedness of this once-prosperous royal free town.
