Žiar nad Hronom, dramatically situated in the valley of the Hron River and surrounded by the volcanic mountain ranges of the Kremnica Mountains and the Vtáčnik, is a city that proudly combines its historical heritage with industrial modernity. The historical jewel of the city is the monumental 17th-century Renaissance episcopal palace, which was once the summer residence of the Archbishops of Banská Bystrica and today serves as a cultural landmark. However, the modern identity of the city was decisively shaped in the 1950s when Žiar nad Hronom became the center of Czechoslovak aluminum production (Slovalco), leading to rapid population growth and urban expansion. Today, the city is not only an important industrial hub but also attracts visitors through the modern Maximilián Hell Planetarium and serves as a practical gateway to the historic mining towns of Central Slovakia.
