Yawri Bay is a shallow marine bay on the coast of Sierra Leone, located approximately 50 kilometers south of the capital, Freetown. It stretches along about 100 kilometers of coastline and is characterized by extensive mudflats and the country's largest mangrove forests. The area is of international ecological significance and has been designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA), hosting tens of thousands of migratory birds annually that rest here along the East Atlantic Flyway. The bay is fed by three major rivers, the Ribbi, the Bumpe, and the Kagboro, whose sediment loads create the nutrient-rich intertidal mudflats. In addition to its avian life, Yawri Bay serves as a vital nursery ground for fish and shrimp, forming the backbone of the local fishing industry. Despite its ecological importance, the bay faces challenges from overfishing and the clearing of mangroves for firewood. Conservation projects are active in the area to develop sustainable management practices to preserve this valuable coastal ecosystem.
