Newton is a fast-growing town in Sierra Leone's Western Area Rural District, lying about 35 kilometers south-east of Freetown along the main road to Waterloo, Bo, and Kenema. The settlement originated as a small Krio village along the Sierra Leone Railway and developed during the 20th century into a supply hub for the growing suburbs of Freetown. After the civil war, Newton experienced particularly strong population growth as many internally displaced people found land for subsistence farming in the fertile lowlands. Today the economy is based on poultry, pig, and sheep farming, vegetable cultivation, rice, cassava, and groundnut production, and a busy weekly market. Newton is also an important strip of fuel stations and workshops for the long-haul trucks running between Freetown and Bo. In recent years, several schools, a health center, churches and mosques, as well as small food-processing units have been built, making Newton a typical example of the suburbanization of the Western Area.
