Gbangbatoke Historical Site (Sierra Leone)

Weather…

Gbangbatoke Historical Site, located in Bonthe District, Southern Province, Sierra Leone, is a significant remnant of the transatlantic slave trade. Established in the 18th century as a slave fort, it served as a holding area where captives were processed before being shipped to the Americas. The site features stone watchtowers, prison cells, and warehouse foundations, some of which have been partially restored. It was designated a national heritage site in 2019 and is part of the UNESCO Slave Route project. Archaeological excavations have uncovered chains, shackles, and European trade goods. The area's mangrove ecosystem historically provided natural concealment. Local guides offer tours, and a small museum displays artifacts. Annual commemorative events honor the victims of the slave trade.
