Tombo is a major fishing village at the southern tip of Sierra Leone's Western Area Rural District, lying about 50 kilometers south-east of Freetown on the Atlantic coast. Tombo is regarded as one of the country's largest fishing ports and is home to a large fleet of pirogues that daily head into the Atlantic for sardines, bonga, wahoo, snapper, and other species. The beach at Tombo is active almost around the clock: women process the catch on the spot, smoking and drying fish that is then shipped to the markets of Waterloo, Freetown, Bo, and Kenema. Alongside fishing, the local economy benefits from a growing tourism sector, since the town has beautiful beaches, mangroves, and boat landings for the Banana and Plantain islands. Tombo is also a meeting point of Krio, Sherbro, and Temne cultures. The town has several schools, a health center, churches, and mosques, and is connected by a paved road to Freetown and Waterloo.
