Mont Fleuri lies on the southern outskirts of Victoria and owes its popular name to the flowering hillside gardens that wealthy townspeople once cultivated here. The landmark of the district is the Seychelles National Botanical Garden, founded in 1901, which on nearly six hectares displays hundreds of plant species, including old Coco de Mer palms, dignified giant tortoises, and a meticulously maintained orchid garden. The district is also home to Seychelles Hospital, the country's only major hospital, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and several international schools. Mont Fleuri is characterized by a mixture of dense hillside housing estates and well-kept twentieth-century townhouses. The Catholic church of St. Therese, a modern 1960s building, anchors the parish community, and the nearby Mont Fleuri Cemetery is the final resting place of many notable figures from Seychellois politics and culture.
