Anse Royale lies on the southeastern coast of Mahé and is historically significant because in 1772 the French botanist Pierre Poivre established here the first spice garden of the Seychelles, known as the Jardin du Roi. The garden survives in restored form and still contains nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, and clove trees, a living witness to the islands' early colonial economy. Modern Anse Royale is home to the main campus of the University of Seychelles, which lends the district an unusually young and intellectual atmosphere. The beach itself is notable for its shallow turquoise water and the small offshore granite islet of Île Souris, which can even be reached on foot at low tide. The religious landmark is the nineteenth-century Catholic church of St. Joseph, whose white facade overlooks the bay. Economically, Anse Royale is also a center for small-scale retail and tropical agriculture, with cinnamon distillation still practiced on a few family estates.
