Au Cap stretches along the southeastern coast of Mahé and is famous for its long, shallow coral beach that reaches far out to sea at low tide. This unique stretch of coast is especially well-suited to beginner snorkelers, since the warm, clear water is only knee-deep and rich in small reef fish, starfish, and coral fragments. The district is home to the Domaine de Val des Près, better known as the "Craft Village", a restored Creole plantation complex that serves as a living folk museum. Here artisans demonstrate traditional boat-building, basketry, and jewelry-making techniques, and the old plantation manor house is open to visitors. Au Cap is also known for its district cemetery, where several members of the early Seychellois administration are buried. The area is a quiet residential one with small family guesthouses and a handful of Creole restaurants serving traditional dishes such as cari coco, a coconut-milk fish curry.
