Anse Etoile stretches along the coastal road just north of Victoria and is one of the most populous districts on Mahé. The name literally means "Star Bay" and, according to local legend, recalls the reflection of the night sky on its calm waters. Historically the area grew out of several Creole family estates that produced coconut oil and salted fish in the nineteenth century. Today Anse Etoile is a mixed residential district with dense building along the shore and larger family homes scattered across the hills. The Catholic parish of St. Andrew is the community's spiritual center, while the state-run Anse Etoile Secondary School is one of the oldest secondary institutions outside the capital. Culturally the district is known for a strong tradition of the Creole sega folk dance and for its popular fusion cuisine, showcased each year at the Festival Kreol. Offshore lie coral fields and lively fish schools that attract local snorkelers.
