Dans Gallas (Seychelles)

Weather…

Dans Gallas is a prominent mountain ridge located in the northern part of Mahé island, above the Glacis district. Rising to about 500 meters, it gives one of the most spectacular viewpoints over the capital Victoria, the harbor, and the offshore islands of the Sainte Anne Marine Park. The mountain's name commemorates the Gallas, a group of liberated slaves from Ethiopia who were brought to the Seychelles by the British Navy in the 19th century and settled in this area. Geologically, the ridge is characterized by massive granite boulders and steep cliffs, typical of the island's geomorphology. The vegetation along the ascent is a mix of introduced species like cinnamon and endemic plants such as the Seychelles pitcher plant in higher reaches. The Dans Gallas trail is one of the most popular on the island, winding through dense forest and across open rock plateaus. Today, Dans Gallas is not only a natural landmark but also a site of historical significance, recalling the multicultural roots of Seychellois society.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This elevated rock plateau is usually accessed via a clearly defined hiking trail originating near Beau Vallon. The starting point can be easily reached by local bus or private transport from Victoria.
📅
Best season
The trail is accessible year-round, but the relatively drier months from May to September provide the most reliable footing. Heavy tropical downpours can make the exposed rocky sections quite treacherous.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The route encompasses a mix of dense tropical forest paths and steep, uneven natural steps carved into the earth. The final ascent involves navigating over large, bare granite boulders to reach the top.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight, breathable clothing and footwear with exceptional grip are absolutely mandatory for the wet rocks. Carry plenty of drinking water, as the high humidity significantly increases perspiration.
🅿️
Parking
Dedicated parking space is generally quite limited directly at the trailhead information board. Most visitors prefer to leave their rental cars in wider roadside spots within the Beau Vallon settlement.
⚠️
Safety
Granitic rock surfaces become highly dangerous and slippery immediately after rain. It is highly advisable to avoid starting the climb during periods of active thunderstorms or poor visibility.
⏱️
Time needed
The complete round-trip hike typically requires between three to four hours for a person of average fitness. Allow extra time at the scenic plateau to fully enjoy the panoramic coastal views.
