Barbarons is a quiet coastal area in the west of Mahé, immediately south of Grand Anse. The district is named after an old plantation that was cultivated here in the nineteenth century, with vanilla and cinnamon as the main crops. Today Barbarons is home to the eponymous four-star resort and several private villa complexes lying directly along the broad sandy beach. Behind the beach stretches the Vacoa Nature Trail, a well-marked hiking path that leads through coastal vegetation, mangroves, and pandanus forest, and is especially popular with birdwatchers. The district lies at the foot of Morne Blanc, one of the higher peaks of Mahé, and thus gives an appealing hinterland for hikes. The West Coast Road runs through Barbarons and provides a fast connection to Anse Royale and Beau Vallon. Notable too is the nearby Science Park with aquaculture research facilities, where the future of marine fish farming in the Indian Ocean is studied.
