Water temperature…
Bel Ombre lies in northwestern Mahé, wedged between the steep slopes of Morne Seychellois National Park and the shore of Beau Vallon Bay. The district is famous for a history rich in pirate lore: here the French corsair Olivier Levasseur, nicknamed La Buse, is said to have hidden his fabled treasure in the eighteenth century. Generations of treasure hunters, most notably the Norwegian Reginald Cruise-Wilkins from the 1940s onward, have dug here for clues, so far in vain. The village itself is today a quiet residential area whose main road narrows after the last hotel into a footpath that leads to the secluded beach of Anse Major. The two-kilometer trail has spectacular cliffside views and passes Takamaka and wild banana trees. Within Bel Ombre several Creole restaurants and a small fishing harbor can be found, from which traditional pirogues set out in the early morning to fish for bonito and wahoo, while local lore still speaks of secret caves hidden in the hillside.
