De Quincey is an elevated residential area north of Victoria's city center, possibly named after the English writer and translator Thomas De Quincey, a homage from the British colonial era. The district lies on the slopes above the Bay of Anse Etoile and provides a sweeping view over the harbor, the Sainte Anne Reef, and on clear days even as far as Praslin Island. The neighborhood consists mainly of two-storey single-family houses with small tropical gardens, often featuring mangoes, papayas, and hibiscus shrubs. De Quincey is one of the quieter neighborhoods around the capital and houses a small primary school as well as a Catholic chapel of ease. The area developed particularly strongly in the 1990s and was partly built on former plantation land. Thanks to its hillside location, the fresh northeast monsoon is often felt here, providing pleasantly cool evenings from October to May.
