Takamaka stretches across the southern tip of Mahé and is named after the imposing Takamaka tree (Calophyllum inophyllum), whose broad canopy shades many of the island's beaches. The district is among the most landscape-preserved regions of the main island: dense mountain forests, lonely coves such as Anse Takamaka and Anse Bazarca, and barely-developed hills define its character. Economically, Takamaka is traditionally agricultural, with smaller plantations for vanilla, cinnamon, and bananas. A particular highlight is the Takamaka Bay Rum Distillery at La Plaine St. André, a restored eighteenth-century plantation residence where rum is still distilled in the old way from local Seychellois sugarcane. The late nineteenth-century Catholic church of Takamaka, a modest white chapel, is the heart of the village community. Off the southern coast lie the small islands of Île Soleil and Île aux Vaches Marines, popular destinations for boat tours.
