Morne Blanc (Seychelles)

Weather…

Morne Blanc is one of the most prominent peaks on Mahé Island, situated within the Morne Seychellois National Park. Reaching an elevation of 667 meters, it is famous for its dramatic cliffs that drop sharply toward the western coast. A well-maintained hiking trail leads visitors through old tea plantations, gradually transitioning into a dense, moist mist forest. The vegetation here is exceptionally diverse and home to numerous endemic species, including the world's smallest frog, Sooglossus gardineri. At the summit, an observation platform provides a spectacular panoramic view of Mahé’s western coastline, including Thérèse Island and Port Glaud bay. Historically, the region was significant for tea cultivation, as evidenced by the nearby tea factory which still operates today. The cool and humid microclimate on the mountain differs significantly from the tropical heat found at the coastal levels.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The trailhead is easily accessible by rental car or the local public bus network heading up Sans Soucis Road. The entrance is clearly marked by a sign board directly on the side of this main cross-island route.
📅
Best season
Hiking is possible year-round, but the drier months from May to September offer the best chance of clear coastal views. Even in the dry season, the mist forest environment means sudden, brief rain showers are common.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trail is a continuous, relentless uphill climb consisting of steep steps, slippery roots, and uneven boulders. While relatively short, the dense, humid jungle environment makes the physical exertion feel much higher.
🎒
What to bring
Good grip footwear is essential, as the muddy sections and exposed roots are perpetually wet and slippery. Bring plenty of water to combat the high humidity, along with insect repellent and a light rain jacket.
🅿️
Parking
A small, unpaved parking layby is situated just slightly down the road from the trailhead sign on Sans Soucis Road. Space is extremely limited, accommodating only a handful of cars, so arriving early is highly recommended.
⚠️
Safety
Take extreme care at the wooden viewing platform at the summit, as the drop-off is sudden and dramatic. Stay securely on the marked path to protect the fragile endemic flora and to avoid treacherous hidden drops.
⏱️
Time needed
The ascent typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour of constant climbing for a person of average fitness. Allow a total of two hours for the round trip, giving yourself plenty of time to rest and admire the spectacular view.
