The Samokovska Reka is a mountain river located in the Kopaonik massif of central Serbia, serving as a key hydrological feature of the Kopaonik National Park. It originates at an elevation of approximately 1,750 meters near the Pančić Peak and is characterized by its exceptionally clear, cold water and steep gradient. The river stretches for about 18 kilometers, creating numerous cascades and small waterfalls as it cuts through crystalline rocks. The Samokovska valley supports high biodiversity, including rare endemic plant species and a significant population of brown trout. Historically, the river's powerful flow was harnessed for sawmills and traditional watermills, remnants of which can still be found along its banks. The river eventually joins the Jošanička Reka. Today, it is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers who appreciate the pristine alpine environment and the geological formations of the Kopaonik mountains.

Getting there
This mountain river within the national park is generally reached via the central hiking trails of Kopaonik. Signposts guide nature enthusiasts down into the corresponding valley.
Best season
Late spring and early summer are handy, as snowmelt dramatically swells the volume of the waterfalls. Autumn captivates with a highly scenic display of foliage along the banks.
Terrain & paths
The path alongside the water leads through forested terrain and over uneven stones. The proximity to the cascades means the ground is frequently damp and quite slippery in places.
What to bring
Waterproof and non-slip footwear is of utmost importance here. A light rain cover or a water-resistant jacket will protect you from the fine mist generated by the numerous waterfalls.
Parking
Vehicles can be parked in the parking lots of nearby ski centers or excursion destinations within the Kopaonik National Park; from there, you proceed strictly on foot into the valley.
Safety
Do not step too close to the edges of the damp rocks next to the cascades. The flow velocity can increase rapidly and unexpectedly, especially following periods of heavy rain.
Time needed
A relaxing hike to admire the various cascades and follow the watercourse for a stretch typically takes roughly two to four hours of your planned time depending on your pace.
