Kopaonik is Serbia's premier mountain range and the largest winter sports center in the Balkans. Known as the 'Mountain of the Sun' due to its more than 200 sunny days per year, the resort features approximately 62 kilometers of alpine and Nordic ski runs. These are served by a modern system of 25 ski lifts, and extensive snowmaking capabilities often extend the season from November through May. The Kopaonik National Park, established in 1981, protects a unique array of flora and fauna, including the endemic Kopaonik houseleek and the rare Pancic spruce. The highest peak, Pančić Peak, sits at 2,017 meters, offering panoramic views across Central Serbia. Beyond winter sports, the region is a summer paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and paragliders. Historically, Kopaonik was a vital mining hub, a fact reflected in its name (derived from 'kopati,' meaning to dig). The surrounding area is home to significant medieval monasteries such as Studenica and Gradac, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The tourism infrastructure is highly developed, offering everything from luxury hotels to cozy mountain huts, complemented by a bustling après-ski scene.
