Golubac Fortress

Golubac Fortress sits on a jagged cliff on the right bank of the Danube, marking the entrance to the Iron Gates gorge. Built in the 14th century, its strategic position made it a crucial stronghold for Serbs, Hungarians, and Ottomans alike. The fortress is renowned for its ten massive towers, connected by stone walls that cascade down the cliffside to the water's edge. The tallest tower, known as the 'Hat Tower', once served as the citadel's primary lookout. Following a major restoration project, the fortress now features a modern visitor center, museum, and well-maintained pathways. Visitors can choose from four tour zones (green, blue, red, black) based on the physical challenge of climbing the steep towers. The view of the Danube from the ramparts is incomparable, as the river spans several kilometers in width here, resembling an inland sea. It is located about 130 km east of Belgrade. The best time to visit is during the warmer months, ideally combining it with a trip into Đerdap National Park.
