Skull Tower Monument Niš (Serbia)

Weather…

The Skull Tower (Ćele Kula) in Niš is one of the most haunting and historically significant monuments in Serbia. It was constructed by the Ottomans in 1809 following the Battle of Čegar as a grim warning to the local population against further rebellion. Originally, 952 skulls of Serbian insurgents who fell during the First Serbian Uprising were embedded into the walls of the rectangular tower. The insurgent commander, Stevan Sinđelić, famously blew up his own powder magazine to avoid capture, taking many of his men and enemies with him. In 1892, a chapel was built around the tower to protect the remaining structure from the elements. Today, only 58 skulls remain, including the one believed to be Sinđelić's. This monument stands as a powerful symbol of national resilience and the immense sacrifice made for Serbian independence.
